Porcelain veneers and zirconia crowns are the two treatments patients ask about most when planning a “Hollywood smile”. Both can change the colour and shape of your teeth, but they are used for different situations. This guide explains the difference so you can have a better conversation with your dentist.
Porcelain veneers
A veneer is a thin porcelain shell bonded to the front surface of a tooth. Only a small amount of enamel is usually removed, so veneers are considered a more conservative option. They are suited to healthy teeth that are discoloured, slightly chipped, uneven or have small gaps. Learn more on our porcelain laminate veneers page.
Zirconia crowns
A crown covers the whole tooth. Zirconia is a strong, metal-free material with a natural appearance, which makes it a common choice for back teeth, heavily filled or root-treated teeth, and for crowns on top of implants. More details are on our zirconium crowns page.
Which one is right for me?
| Porcelain veneers | Zirconia crowns | |
|---|---|---|
| Covers | Front surface only | Whole tooth |
| Tooth preparation | Minimal | More |
| Best for | Healthy front teeth with cosmetic issues | Weak, broken, heavily filled or root-treated teeth; implants |
| Appearance | Very natural translucency | Natural, metal-free |
Many smile makeovers combine both: veneers on healthy front teeth and crowns where a tooth needs more support. The final choice depends on the condition of each tooth, your bite and your goals.
Planning your smile design
Before any tooth is prepared, a digital smile design lets you and your dentist agree on tooth shape, length and shade. Healthy gums are also important for a good result, so gum aesthetics or a cleaning may be recommended first.
