Zirconia crowns are one of the most requested treatments at our clinic in Kyrenia. They are strong, metal-free and look natural, which makes them suitable for both front and back teeth. This guide explains when a crown is the right choice and what the treatment involves.
What is a zirconia crown?
A crown is a cap that covers the whole visible part of a tooth. Zirconia is a very strong ceramic material without metal, so there is no dark line at the gum. See our zirconium crowns page for more detail.
When is a crown needed?
- A tooth is broken or has a very large filling
- A tooth has had root canal treatment and needs protection
- A tooth is replaced with a dental implant and needs a crown on top
- Several teeth are replaced with a bridge
- Old metal-ceramic crowns are replaced for a more natural look
Zirconia or other materials?
- Zirconia: very strong, metal-free, a good choice for back teeth and bridges
- Layered zirconia or e.max: more translucent, often preferred for front teeth
- Metal-ceramic: strong but can show a grey line at the gum over time
If your front teeth are healthy and you only want to change their colour or shape, porcelain veneers may be a more conservative option.
Treatment steps
- Examination and X-rays
- Tooth preparation and a digital scan
- A temporary crown while the final one is made
- Fitting the zirconia crown and checking the bite
Crowns are usually completed in a few appointments over several days. Your dentist will confirm the schedule for your case.
Looking after zirconia crowns
Crowns cannot decay, but the tooth underneath and the gums around it still can. Brush twice a day, clean between your teeth and keep regular check-ups.
Frequently asked questions
Do zirconia crowns look natural?
Yes. Modern zirconia can be matched to the shade of your other teeth. For front teeth, layered zirconia or e.max is often used for extra translucency.
Are zirconia crowns painful?
The tooth is numbed with local anaesthesia during preparation. Some sensitivity for a few days afterwards is normal.
How long do they last?
Zirconia crowns are durable and can last many years with good care. Grinding and poor hygiene shorten their life.
How much do zirconia crowns cost?
Prices depend on the number of teeth and the materials chosen. We prepare a personal treatment plan and quote after your consultation or after reviewing recent photos and X-rays sent on WhatsApp.
Can a zirconia crown be placed on an implant?
Yes. Zirconia is a common choice for crowns on implants because it is strong and metal-free.
Will I have a temporary crown?
Usually yes. A temporary crown protects the prepared tooth while the final zirconia crown is being made.
Risks and limitations
Preparing a tooth for a crown removes tooth structure, so crowns are recommended only when the tooth needs the protection. After preparation some patients notice sensitivity for a few days. Very rarely a tooth under a crown later needs root canal treatment. A poorly fitting crown can trap plaque, which is why an accurate digital scan and a careful fit are important.
Travelling to Kyrenia for treatment
Kyrenia is about 15–45 minutes from the crossing points in Nicosia, so patients from Nicosia, Larnaca, Limassol and Paphos can often attend appointments as day trips. Visitors from the UK and Europe usually fly into Ercan or Larnaca. Bring your ID card or passport for the crossing; if you drive your own car, you will need separate car insurance for the north, which can be bought at the crossing point.
Message us on WhatsApp if you would like help with transport from the crossing point.
Preparing for your first visit
- A list of any medicines you take and any medical conditions (for example diabetes, heart problems, blood thinners)
- Recent dental X-rays or scans if you have them; a panoramic X-ray sent in advance allows a first assessment
- Photos of your smile and any reference photos of results you like
- Enough time in your schedule for the planned number of visits, plus a spare day in case an adjustment is needed
- Questions you want to ask: write them down so nothing is forgotten
